Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

426
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

12.9K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Group Polarization01:01

Group Polarization

34.9K
Group polarization is the strengthening of an original group attitude following the discussion of views within a group (Teger & Pruitt, 1967). That is, if a group initially favors a viewpoint, after discussion the group consensus is likely a stronger endorsement of the viewpoint. Conversely, if the group was initially opposed to a viewpoint, group discussion would likely lead to stronger opposition.

Surveys02:16

Surveys

15.0K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Critical Region, Critical Values and Significance Level01:16

Critical Region, Critical Values and Significance Level

12.1K
The critical region, critical value, and significance level are interdependent concepts crucial in hypothesis testing.
In hypothesis testing, a sample statistic is converted to a test statistic using z, t, or chi-square distribution. A critical region is an area under the curve in  probability distributions demarcated by the critical value. When the test statistic falls in this region, it suggests that the null hypothesis must be rejected. As this region contains all those values of the...

Empirical Method to Interpret Standard Deviation01:09

Empirical Method to Interpret Standard Deviation

5.4K
The empirical rule, also known as the three-sigma rule, allows a statistician to interpret the standard deviation in a normally distributed dataset. The rule states that 68% of the data lies within one standard deviation from the mean, 95% lies within two standard deviations from the mean, and 99.7% lies within three standard deviations from the mean. Additionally, this rule is also called the 68-95-99.7 rule.
This rule is used widely in statistics to calculate the proportion of data values...

Summary

A new scale, the Detecting Extremism and Religious Radicalism (SERR) scale, shows good reliability and validity for measuring religious extremism and radicalism in Christian/Catholic and Muslim believers.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Sociology
  • Religious Studies

Background:

  • Increasing global religious, political, and social violence necessitates tools to measure related psychological constructs.
  • Existing measures may not adequately capture the nuances of religious extremism and radicalism.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of a new self-report scale, the Detecting Extremism and Religious Radicalism (SERR) scale.
  • To establish the reliability and validity of the SERR for assessing religious extremism and radicalism.

Main Methods:

  • Factor analyses, reliability, and validity data were collected from 1985 actively religious participants across 58 Spanish cities.
  • The SERR scale's internal consistency, factor structure, and convergent validity were statistically analyzed.

Main Results:

  • The SERR scale demonstrated acceptable internal consistency (ω > .74) and a confirmed two-dimensional structure.
  • Scores on the SERR's extremism dimension showed significant positive correlations with scores on the Activism and Radicalism Intention Scales.

Conclusions:

  • The SERR scale is a reliable and valid instrument for assessing the degree of extremism and radicalism.
  • The scale is suitable for use with Christian/Catholic and Muslim populations.
