    Summary

    This study found that habitual smoking and field dependence significantly impact contrast sensitivity. Field-independent non-smokers performed better than field-dependent smokers, with implications for performance in critical tasks.

    • Contrast sensitivity, field dependence, and smoking are linked to human performance.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the individual and combined effects of cigarette smoking and field dependence on contrast sensitivity.
    • To establish the relationship between these factors and their impact on visual performance.

    • 12 smokers and 16 non-smokers were assessed for field dependence and contrast sensitivity.
    • Contrast sensitivity was measured using the Nicolet CS 2000 Testing System under controlled conditions.
    • Smokers' contrast sensitivity was compared immediately after smoking versus after a 90-minute deprivation period.

    • No immediate difference in contrast sensitivity was observed in smokers after smoking one cigarette compared to after deprivation.

    • Field-independent non-smokers demonstrated significantly higher contrast sensitivity than field-dependent smokers across most spatial frequencies.

    Conclusions:

    • Habitual smoking and field dependence are significant factors influencing contrast sensitivity.
    • The findings suggest potential applications in selection and training for roles requiring high visual performance, such as aircraft and vehicle operation.
