Background:

  • Previous research indicates phoenixin's involvement in emotional and immunological stress, prompting further investigation into its function during physical stress.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of abdominal surgery, a physical stressor, on the activity of phoenixin-immunoreactive brain nuclei.
  • To evaluate the role of phoenixin in the physiological stress response to surgical procedures.

Main Methods:

  • Male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent either abdominal surgery or a sham operation under anesthesia.
  • Brains were analyzed for c-Fos activity (a marker of neuronal activation) and phoenixin density post-procedure.

Main Results:

  • Abdominal surgery significantly increased c-Fos activity in multiple brain nuclei, including the PVN, mNTS, RPa, SON, VLM, DMN, LC, and EW.
  • No significant changes in phoenixin immunoreactivity were observed between the surgery and sham groups.
  • C-Fos activity in the amygdala (CeM) was not significantly altered by the surgery.

Conclusions:

  • The heightened neuronal activity in phoenixin-immunoreactive nuclei following abdominal surgery supports phoenixin's involvement in stress reactions.
  • Findings suggest a stressor-specific role for phoenixin, as different stressors may elicit distinct changes in phoenixin-containing nuclei activity.
