Virtual Work

926
The principle of virtual work states that if a body is in static and dynamic equilibrium, then the sum of all the virtual work done by all external forces and couple moments for any given virtual displacement must be zero.
In static equilibrium, a body can experience an imaginary or virtual movement, such as displacement or rotation. The virtual work done by a force is equal to the dot product of force and virtual displacement in the direction of the force. When it comes to virtually rotating a...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Graduate Medical Education
  • Physician Recruitment

Background:

  • Virtual interviews (VI) are a novel recruitment method for residency programs, with limited prior research.
  • Existing studies are primarily descriptive and focus on surgical/subspecialty training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate first-year residents' perceptions of their virtual interview experience.
  • To compare virtual interview perceptions between primary care and non-primary care specialties.

Main Methods:

  • An electronic survey was distributed to 35 Illinois institutional officials, utilizing a snowball sample.
  • 82 first-year residents completed the survey, with data analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square tests.

Main Results:

  • Most residents (54.8%-75.3%) found VI accurately represented their programs.
  • Primary care residents reported VI better depicted patient population, resident morale, and overall experience compared to non-primary care residents.
  • 25.7% of respondents felt inaccurately represented by the VI.

Conclusions:

  • Virtual interviews offer a fair portrayal of residency programs, but improvements are needed.
  • Primary care programs may excel at conveying resident morale, camaraderie, and overall experience via VI.
