Burn Injuries01:22

Burn Injuries

2.7K
Burn injuries occur when the skin and underlying tissues are damaged due to exposure to heat, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or friction. They can vary in severity, from minor superficial burns to severe deep burns that can be life-threatening.
The damage results in the death of skin cells, which can lead to a massive loss of fluid. Dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure follow, which can be fatal. Burn patients are treated with intravenous fluids to offset...

Methods of Documentation II: POMR

1.0K
The Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) revolutionized medical record-keeping by introducing a systematic approach focusing on the patient's problems rather than merely listing symptoms. Dr. Lawrence Weed's introduction of this method in the 1960s marked a significant advancement in medical documentation. The POMR framework consists of four key components: the database, problem list, plan of care, and progress notes.

Assessment of Respiration

1.3K
The respiratory system's basic structures and primary functions lay the foundation for nurses' comprehensive respiratory assessments. This assessment includes subjective and objective data to gauge the patient's respiratory health.
Subjective Assessment: Nurses interview the patient to gather information directly during the subjective assessment. It includes questions about the individual's medical history, medications, and symptoms, focusing on past respiratory conditions like...

Coping Strategies: Problem Focused

117
Coping strategies are methods people use to manage, tolerate, or reduce the effects of stressors. These strategies involve both behavioral and psychological actions to handle stressful situations. One common approach is problem-focused coping, which aims to change or eliminate the source of stress rather than merely addressing its consequences. This method involves taking direct action to resolve the issue causing stress.
For example, consider a student who struggles to understand their...

Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data

422
A thorough health history and physical assessment are essential for identifying cardiovascular disease (CVD) symptoms and distinguishing them from other health issues.
Initial Enquiry
Ask the patient about their primary concern and thoroughly explore all reported symptoms.
Medical History
Investigate past illnesses affecting the cardiovascular system, such as angina, anemia, rheumatic fever, congenital heart disease, stroke, thrombophlebitis, dysrhythmias, varicosities
Inquire about symptoms...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Occupational Health
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Healthcare professionals, including postgraduate residents (PGRs), face demanding work environments leading to physical and mental stress.
  • Burnout is a significant concern within the medical field, impacting healthcare worker well-being and potentially patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence and characteristics of burnout among postgraduate residents (PGRs).
  • To identify demographic factors associated with burnout in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 113 postgraduate residents at The Children's Hospital and The Institute of Child's Health, Lahore.
  • Burnout was assessed using the Copenhagen Burnout Inventory (CBI) via paper questionnaires.
  • Data analysis was performed using SPSS version 26.

Main Results:

  • Over 50% of participants reported moderate to severe burnout, with personal burnout being the most prevalent.
  • Personal burnout was significantly higher in those self-identifying as burnt out (p=0.000), and work burnout was higher in those commuting by car (p=0.025).
  • While burnout trends suggested higher rates in females, those with longer commutes, and children of doctors, these differences were not statistically significant. The CBI demonstrated good internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha=0.697).

Conclusions:

  • A high prevalence of burnout exists among postgraduate residents, necessitating targeted interventions.
  • Addressing burnout is crucial for the well-being of healthcare professionals and the quality of patient care.
