Optimal nutrition can improve athletic performance at moderate altitudes. This case study shows an 11-week intervention enhanced body composition, strength, and endurance in a high-level athlete.
Area of Science:
- Sports Nutrition
- Altitude Physiology
- Exercise Metabolism
Background:
- Moderate altitudes induce physiological and metabolic changes impacting exercise performance.
- Nutritional interventions can modulate these altitude-induced adaptations.
- This study presents the first nutritional intervention case for a moderate altitude athlete.
Observation:
- An 11-week nutritional intervention (2800-3500 kcal/day) was applied to a male high-level moderate altitude athlete.
- The intervention included specific macronutrient targets, iron, antioxidants, creatine, and beta-alanine.
- Key metrics monitored included body composition, strength, fitness, nutrient oxidation, and sleep quality.
Findings:
- The athlete exhibited decreased adiposity and increased fat-free mass.
- Muscle strength and endurance adaptations improved, evidenced by enhanced heart rate recovery.
- Carbohydrate oxidation increased during rest and exercise, alongside improved subjective sleep quality.
Implications:
- Nutritional strategies adapted to altitude can optimize body composition in athletes.
- Tailored nutrition enhances physiological adaptations to exercise at moderate altitudes.
- This approach can improve substrate utilization and performance for high-level athletes in hypoxic environments.

Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...
Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
