This study developed a health literacy (HL) measurement tool for Finnish 9th graders. The objective instrument assesses learning outcomes in Health Education (HE), providing data for national policies and curriculum development.
Area of Science:
- Educational Measurement
- Public Health
- Pedagogy
Background:
- Health literacy (HL) is crucial for academic success and public health.
- Assessing HL in adolescents requires valid and reliable measurement instruments.
- Existing tools may not adequately capture curriculum-specific learning outcomes in Health Education (HE).
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop an objective, curriculum- and performance-based health literacy (HL) measurement instrument.
- To assess Finnish 9th graders' learning outcomes in Health Education (HE).
- To provide a tool for evaluating HL in school settings.
Main Methods:
- Development involved four phases: theoretical framework construction, item generation, field testing, and item analysis.
- Initial formulation of 303 HL test items, with 107 tested in field versions (n=252).
- Final instrument comprised 55 items, validated through analysis of data from 3652 ninth graders (aged 15-16).
Main Results:
- Both field test versions demonstrated high reliability (Cronbach's alpha).
- The item analysis and testing process led to a refined HL measurement instrument.
- The final instrument is comprehensive, competence- and curriculum-based.
Conclusions:
- A valid and reliable HL measurement instrument for school-aged children was successfully developed.
- This tool facilitates the assessment of HL within the Finnish HE curriculum.
- The measurement of school-based HL can inform national health policies and educational strategies.
