Summary

A pilot phase significantly improved face validity and prediction accuracy in composite time trade-off (cTTO) data for EQ-5D-5L valuation studies. While protocol compliance was initially high, an extended pilot may benefit studies facing interviewer effects.

Area of Science:

  • Health Economics
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The EQ-5D-5L valuation study in Egypt aimed to collect reliable composite time trade-off (cTTO) data.
  • Quality control and pilot phases are crucial for ensuring data validity and reducing errors in health valuation studies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of an extensive pilot phase on protocol compliance, face validity, interviewer effects, and prediction errors in cTTO data.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of quality control (QC) measures in the Egyptian EQ-5D-5L valuation study.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized cTTO data and QC reports from the Egyptian EQ-5D-5L valuation study.
  • Employed three-level mixed models to analyze interviewer effects and ordinary least squares (OLS) regression to assess mean absolute error (MAE) improvement.
  • Evaluated protocol compliance, face validity, and prediction errors.

Main Results:

  • A total of 1180 interviews (206 pilot, 974 actual) were analyzed.
  • Substantial improvements in face validity and prediction accuracy were observed, with MAE decreasing from 0.44 in pilot data to 0.37 in actual data.
  • High initial protocol compliance was noted, and interviewer variance remained small throughout the study.

Conclusions:

  • The pilot phase and strict QC implementation effectively enhanced face validity and prediction accuracy of cTTO data.
  • An extended pilot phase could be more advantageous for EQ-5D-5L valuation studies encountering initial challenges with protocol compliance or interviewer effects.
