Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to the cancellation of in-person residency interviews and away rotations.
  • This significantly impacted the medical residency application process for the graduating class of 2021.
  • Understanding the effects on geographic matching is crucial for future application cycles.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze geographic relationships in orthopedic surgery residency matches.
  • To investigate the impact of COVID-19 on these geographic relationships.
  • To compare orthopedic residency home program match rates before and after the pandemic.

Main Methods:

  • Data on orthopedic residents and their medical schools were collected from residency websites and social media.
  • The study included 134 allopathic and nonmilitary orthopedic residency programs, analyzing 3253 residents.
  • Proportions of home program matches and same-state/region matches were calculated and compared pre- and during the pandemic.

Main Results:

  • The percentage of orthopedic residency slots filled by home program students increased from 21.8% (2017-2020) to 28.2% (2021).
  • Matches with medical students from the same state significantly increased from 34.7% to 39.3% during the pandemic.
  • Matching rates with applicants from the same region remained largely consistent (63.6% during pandemic vs. 63.3% pre-pandemic).

Conclusions:

  • Orthopedic residency programs demonstrated an increased preference for home program applicants during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • This trend persisted despite the shift to virtual interviews and rotations.
  • The findings suggest a nationwide hesitation towards virtual interview processes by both programs and applicants.
