Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Sentinel lymph node biopsy is crucial for breast cancer staging.
  • Accurate identification of sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) impacts treatment decisions.
  • Current methods like blue dye and radioactive tracers have limitations in detection rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of lymphosonography in identifying SLNs in breast cancer patients.
  • To compare the accuracy of lymphosonography with standard methods (blue dye and radioactive tracer).
  • To assess the detection rate of malignant SLNs using lymphosonography.

Main Methods:

  • 86 breast cancer patients undergoing surgical excision were enrolled.
  • Ultrasound contrast agent (UCA) was injected subcutaneously around the tumor.
  • Lymphosonography using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) identified SLNs, alongside standard blue dye and radioactive tracer.

Main Results:

  • Lymphosonography demonstrated high accuracy (99.4%) compared to blue dye.
  • Lymphosonography (86.5%) was significantly more accurate than blue dye (68.5%) when compared to radioactive tracer.
  • All 34 malignant SLNs were detected by lymphosonography, achieving a 100% detection rate.

Conclusions:

  • Lymphosonography is a highly accurate method for identifying SLNs in breast cancer patients.
  • This technique surpasses traditional methods in detecting malignant SLNs.
  • Lymphosonography offers a promising advancement in breast cancer staging and surgical guidance.
