Aneurysm II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

18
Thoracic, aortic arch and abdominal aneurysms are significant vascular conditions that can present with various clinical manifestations and lead to serious complications. Understanding these manifestations and the appropriate diagnostic studies is essential for effective management and treatment.Thoracic Aortic AneurysmsThoracic aortic aneurysms often remain asymptomatic until they reach a size that impinges on adjacent structures. They typically cause deep, diffuse chest pain that radiates to...

Hypertension III: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

36
Hypertension is asymptomatic and also referred to as the "silent killer" until it progresses to a severe stage or causes target organ disease. Patients may experience symptoms stemming from the strain on blood vessels and tissues in various organs or the heart's increased workload.Physical exams might show no abnormalities other than high blood pressure. Signs of vascular damage, when present, correspond to the organs supplied by the affected vessels, leading to target organ damage. For...

Area of Science:

  • Medical Research
  • Rare Diseases
  • Physician Education

Background:

  • Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder.
  • It stems from C1-inhibitor deficiency, causing recurrent swelling and pain.
  • Early HAE diagnosis and treatment are vital for patient well-being and preventing fatal attacks.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the knowledge and awareness levels of physicians regarding HAE.
  • To identify gaps in physician understanding of HAE diagnosis and management.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire on HAE was administered to 393 physicians at a university hospital.
  • Participants answered multiple-choice questions about HAE.

Main Results:

  • 7.3% of physicians had never heard of HAE.
  • Only 7.4% correctly identified diagnostic tests, and 0.8% correctly identified emergency management.
  • Internists, pediatricians, and emergency medicine specialists scored higher, as did those in internal medical sciences.

Conclusions:

  • Physician awareness of HAE is significantly low.
  • Misdiagnosis of HAE as histaminergic angioedema leads to ineffective treatment.
  • Enhanced physician education is essential for improving HAE patient care.
