Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

685
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

613
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Accessory Structures of the Eye

1.7K
Optical perception, or vision, is an extraordinary sense dependent on converting light signals received via the ocular organs. These organs, known as eyes, are securely positioned within the bony cavities of the skull, called orbits. The orbits serve a dual purpose: a protective shield for the ocular globes and a stable attachment point for the soft ocular tissues. The eye's external protective mechanisms include the eyelids, which are edged with lashes that act as a barrier against foreign...

Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

520
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.

Secondary Lymphoid Organs

1.9K
Secondary organs, including lymph nodes, the spleen, and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), work harmoniously to protect us from disease and infection.
The spleen is a vital organ in the lymphatic system, nestled in the upper left side of the abdomen. It is composed of two primary regions: the red pulp and the white pulp, each having distinct functions. The red pulp performs a significant role in blood filtration. It efficiently purges the blood of old or damaged red blood cells and...

Sexually Transmitted Infections01:26

Sexually Transmitted Infections

391
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are diseases transmitted primarily through unsafe sexual interactions. Bacteria, viruses, or parasites cause them and can result in severe health complications if untreated.ChlamydiaThe bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis is responsible for the disease Chlamydia, the most common STI in the United States. This peculiar pathogen requires human cells to reproduce, residing intracellularly. The initial infection often goes unnoticed because it typically does not...

Summary

This study highlights a rare case of ligneous conjunctivitis, a chronic eye inflammation, triggered by a viral infection. Conservative management with topical cyclosporine and heparin effectively resolved lesions and prevented recurrence.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Ligneous conjunctivitis is a rare chronic inflammatory condition of the conjunctiva.
  • It can be triggered by various ocular insults, including trauma and infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To present a case of ligneous conjunctivitis caused by a viral infection.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of conservative management, specifically topical cyclosporine and heparin, in treating this condition.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a patient with ligneous conjunctivitis.
  • Treatment involved topical administration of cyclosporine and heparin.

Main Results:

  • The viral infection-induced ligneous conjunctivitis responded well to conservative management.
  • Topical cyclosporine and heparin led to the resolution of conjunctival lesions.
  • This treatment regimen also effectively prevented the recurrence of lesions.

Conclusions:

  • Conservative management with topical cyclosporine and heparin can be an effective treatment for ligneous conjunctivitis, even when triggered by viral infections.
  • This therapeutic approach offers a promising option for lesion resolution and recurrence prevention in ligneous conjunctivitis.
