Egoism and Altruism

92.1K
Voluntary behavior with the intent to help other people is called prosocial behavior. Why do people help other people? Is personal benefit such as feeling good about oneself the only reason people help one another?

The Scientific Method02:40

The Scientific Method

60.2K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Altruism01:03

Altruism

41.5K
Altruistic behaviors are “unselfish” behaviors—those that help another individual at the expense of the individual carrying out the behavior. Despite the negative consequences for the altruistic animal, these behaviors are thought to have evolved for several reasons.

Humanistic Psychology01:24

Humanistic Psychology

1.2K
Humanistic psychology emerged in the mid-20th century as a response to the deterministic and pessimistic nature of behaviorism and psychoanalysis. While behaviorism focused on observable behaviors influenced by the environment and psychoanalysis delved into unconscious motivations, both theories suggested that human actions lacked free will. In contrast, humanistic psychology offers a perspective that emphasizes the innate potential for goodness and growth within every individual.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.1K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Behavioral Science

Background:

  • Kindness interventions are known to improve well-being.
  • The impact of kindness on materialism and external aspirations requires further investigation.
  • This study explores the effects of kindness on materialism, aspirations, and impulsive shopping behavior.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate whether kindness interventions can decrease materialism and external aspirations.
  • To examine the influence of kindness interventions on impulsive shopping behavior.
  • To understand the relationship between practicing kindness and internal/external aspirations.

Main Methods:

  • 122 female participants were randomly assigned to a three-week kindness practice group or a neutral control group.
  • Participants completed assessments of life satisfaction, materialism, and internal/external aspirations before and after the intervention.
  • The study measured changes in these variables in response to the kindness intervention.

Main Results:

  • While both groups showed increased life satisfaction and decreased materialism, kindness practice specifically led to increased affiliation aspirations.
  • Practicing kindness was associated with a reduction in the intention for impulsive shopping.
  • Kindness interventions shifted focus from external aspirations towards internal aspirations.

Conclusions:

  • Kindness interventions may not directly reduce materialism but can enhance personal happiness, potentially leading to decreased materialism.
  • The study highlights that kind individuals tend to value internal aspirations over materialistic values.
  • Findings suggest that promoting kindness can foster psychological well-being and reduce materialistic tendencies indirectly.
