Salivary arginase is a pro-inflammatory marker, while elevated salivary uric acid is anti-inflammatory in periodontal disease. Non-surgical therapy improved periodontal status and altered these salivary markers.
Area of Science:
- Oral Medicine
- Periodontology
- Biochemistry
Background:
- Periodontitis and gingivitis are inflammatory conditions affecting periodontal tissues.
- Salivary biomarkers are increasingly utilized for non-invasive disease assessment.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate salivary uric acid and arginase levels in periodontitis, gingivitis, and healthy individuals.
- To investigate the impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy on these salivary markers.
Main Methods:
- Sixty subjects were categorized into healthy, generalized gingivitis, and generalized periodontitis groups.
- Saliva samples and periodontal parameters were assessed at baseline and post-therapy (day 90).
- Non-surgical periodontal therapy was administered to gingivitis and periodontitis groups.
Main Results:
- Salivary arginase levels were elevated in gingivitis and periodontitis groups at baseline.
- Salivary uric acid levels were lower in gingivitis and periodontitis groups at baseline.
- Both markers showed significant changes post-therapy, correlating with clinical improvements.
Conclusions:
- Salivary arginase acts as a pro-inflammatory marker in periodontal disease.
- Elevated salivary uric acid levels indicate an anti-inflammatory role following periodontal therapy.
- These salivary markers are valuable for assessing periodontal status and treatment outcomes.
