Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between extreme temperatures and cause-specific cardiovascular mortality globally.
  • To quantify excess deaths attributable to extreme heat and cold across various cardiovascular conditions.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized a large, multinational database (Multi-Country Multi-City Collaborative Network) of daily cardiovascular deaths (1979-2019) from 567 cities.
  • Employed case-crossover models and meta-analysis to assess associations between extreme temperatures (99th/1st percentiles) and specific CVD mortality (CVD, ischemic heart disease, stroke, heart failure, arrhythmia).
  • Calculated excess deaths for hot (above 97.5th percentile) and cold (below 2.5th percentile) days compared to minimum mortality temperature.
