Sports team participation is linked to less cigarette and dual use but more electronic vapor product (EVP) use in adolescents. Athletes are more likely to use EVPs less frequently, highlighting different risk profiles for these products.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between sports team participation and electronic vapor product (EVP) use in adolescents.
  • To compare EVP use patterns with cigarette use patterns among student athletes.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional analysis of the 2015-2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey data.
  • Logistic regression models examined associations between sports participation and exclusive cigarette, exclusive EVP, and dual use.
  • Adjustments were made for sex, grade, and survey year.

Main Results:

  • Sports team participation was associated with lower odds of cigarette use (aOR 0.58) and dual use (aOR 0.74).
  • Participation was linked to higher odds of exclusive EVP use (aOR 1.39).
  • Among exclusive users, athletes reported less frequent EVP use (aOR 0.74).

  • Risk profiles for cigarette and EVP use differ concerning sports team participation.
