    Summary

Biofeedback-assisted relaxation effectively reduced pain for a patient with primary dysmenorrhea resistant to other treatments. This behavioral therapy offers a promising alternative for managing menstrual pain symptoms.

    Area of Science:

    • Behavioral Medicine
    • Psychophysiology

    Background:

    • Primary dysmenorrhea is a common gynecological complaint.
    • Behavioral therapies are emerging as effective treatments for dysmenorrhea symptoms.

    Observation:

    • A case study investigated biofeedback-assisted relaxation for primary dysmenorrhea.
    • The patient had an 18-year history of pain resistant to hormonal and analgesic therapies.
    • Menstrual Symptom Questionnaire classified the dysmenorrhea as spasmodic or congestive.

    Findings:

    • Eight sessions of skin-temperature biofeedback and autogenic training were administered.
    • The patient reported significant reductions in pain and discomfort.
    • This treatment was effective without using desensitization via visual imagery.

    Implications:

    • Biofeedback-assisted relaxation presents a viable alternative treatment for primary dysmenorrhea.
    • Further research is recommended to confirm efficacy in both congestive and spasmodic dysmenorrhea subtypes.
