Bacteroides finegoldii, an anaerobic gut bacterium, was identified as the cause of a rare human infection in a patient with abdominal pain. This case marks the first reported instance of B. finegoldii leading to a severe human illness.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Clinical Medicine
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Bacteroides finegoldii is a Gram-negative, anaerobic bacterium commonly found in human gut microbiota.
- Studies have primarily focused on its role within the intestinal environment.
Observation:
- A 93-year-old patient presented with abdominal pain and was found to have B. finegoldii in their blood culture.
- Diagnostic imaging revealed a neoplastic mass infiltrating the sigmoid colon and bladder, suggesting a colo-vesical fistula.
Findings:
- Microbiological identification of B. finegoldii was confirmed using MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA sequencing.
- This is the first documented case of B. finegoldii causing a human infection outside of the intestinal tract.
Implications:
- This case expands the known pathogenic potential of B. finegoldii.
- Highlights the importance of considering gut commensals as potential pathogens in complex clinical scenarios.
- Suggests further research into the mechanisms by which B. finegoldii can translocate and cause systemic infection.
