Abstract:
The front cover artwork is provided by Prof. Rainer Glaser's group at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. The image shows one of four potential energy surfaces generated from our rotation-inversion study of tertiary carbamates and highlights two of the eight possible transition state pathways between two ensembles of E- and Z-minima. In the context of synthetic studies of fluorinated carbamates R1 O-CO-N(R2 )CH2 CF3 , we unexpectedly observed two sets of 13 C NMR quartets for the CF3 group and we needed to understand their origin. SN1 Reaction: Stereochemistry
In the first step of an SN1 reaction, the bond between the electrophilic carbon and the leaving group ionizes to generate the carbocation intermediate. The second step of the mechanism is the nucleophilic attack.
In the formed carbocation, the positively charged carbon is sp2 hybridized with a trigonal planar geometry. As all the three substituents lie on the same plane, a plane of symmetry for the...
Thermal Electrocyclic Reactions: Stereochemistry
Selection Rules: Thermal Activation
Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
Regioselectivity and Stereochemistry of Hydroboration
Hydroboration proceeds in a concerted fashion with the attack of borane on the π bond, giving a cyclic four-centered transition state. The –BH2 group is bonded to the less substituted carbon and –H to the more substituted carbon. The concerted nature requires the simultaneous addition of –H and –BH2 across the same face of the alkene giving syn...
