Summary

Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) showed more errors and omissions on a challenging visual attention task. A new tablet-based test offers objective assessment of visual search performance in ADHD.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate a novel tablet-based computerized test battery for objectively assessing visual attention in children.
  • To compare visual search performance between children with ADHD and typically developing controls.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 49 children with ADHD and 49 age- and IQ-matched typically developing (TD) controls participated.
  • Visual attention was measured using a computerized modified barrage test on a tablet.
  • Performance metrics included time to completion, errors, and omissions across three sub-tasks.

  • A significant correlation was found between sustained attention load and errors/omissions in both groups.
  • Children with ADHD exhibited significantly more errors and omissions during the most demanding visual attention sub-task.
  • This performance difference was not attributable to variations in task completion time.

Conclusions:

  • The heightened errors in children with ADHD on the stringent sub-task may reflect deficient neural activity in frontal areas crucial for endogenous visual attention.
  • The developed tablet-based cognitive battery shows promise as a tool for objectively estimating visual attention impairments in ADHD.
  • This technology could aid in the early identification and characterization of attention deficits in pediatric ADHD.
