Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between peripheral blood eosinophil counts and bronchial responsiveness (histamine PC20) in asthmatic subjects.
  • To determine if this relationship differs between atopic and non-atopic individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Measured bronchial responsiveness using histamine PC20 in 23 asthmatic subjects.
  • Quantified peripheral blood eosinophil counts at baseline.
  • Analyzed correlations between eosinophil counts, histamine PC20, and FEV1 in the overall group and subgroups (atopic vs. non-atopic).

Main Results:

  • A significant inverse correlation was found between baseline eosinophil count and histamine PC20 in the entire group (r = -0.71; p < 0.001).
  • This inverse relationship was observed in both atopic (r = -0.74; p < 0.01) and non-atopic (r = -0.68; p < 0.05) asthmatic subjects.
  • No significant correlation was found between eosinophil count and FEV1, or between FEV1 and histamine PC20 in atopic subjects.

Conclusions:

  • Peripheral blood eosinophil counts are inversely related to non-specific bronchial responsiveness in asthma.
  • This association is present in both atopic and non-atopic asthma.
  • Eosinophil levels may serve as a biomarker for airway hyperresponsiveness in asthma.
