RADIC:A tool for diagnosing COVID-19 from chest CT and X-ray scans using deep learning and quad-radiomics
1Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, College of Engineering & Technology, Arab Academy for Science, Technology & Maritime Transport, Alexandria, Egypt.
This study introduces RADIC, an automated tool using deep learning (DL) and radiomics-generated images for accurate COVID-19 detection from CT and X-ray scans, achieving over 99% accuracy.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Artificial Intelligence
- Radiology
Background:
- Deep learning (DL) models show promise for rapid COVID-19 diagnosis using CT and X-ray scans.
- Current DL models primarily use spatial image information, potentially limiting diagnostic accuracy.
- Radiomics-generated images and combined feature analysis may enhance DL model performance for COVID-19 detection.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate RADIC, an automated tool for COVID-19 detection using DL models trained on radiomics-generated images.
- To investigate the efficacy of combining radiomics features with time-frequency representations for improved diagnostic accuracy.
- To compare the performance of RADIC against existing studies for COVID-19 detection.
Main Methods:
- Four radiomics approaches were used to analyze original CT and X-ray images.
- Three DL models were trained on distinct sets of radiomics, X-ray, and CT images.
- Deep features were extracted, dimension-reduced via Fast Walsh Hadamard Transform, and combined using discrete cosine transform for classification.
Main Results:
- RADIC achieved high diagnostic accuracy: 99.4% on the CT dataset and 99% on the X-ray dataset.
- The study demonstrated that DL models trained with radiomics-generated images outperform those trained with original scans.
- Incorporating deep features from multiple radiomics approaches significantly improved diagnostic accuracy.
Conclusions:
- RADIC offers a highly accurate and automated solution for COVID-19 detection.
- Training DL models with radiomics-generated images is more effective than using original CT and X-ray images.
- The integration of multi-radiomics deep features enhances the diagnostic performance for COVID-19 detection.

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System III: X-Ray
Definition and Purpose
An X-ray, or radiograph, is a non-invasive method that uses ionizing radiation to take images of internal structures. It is mainly used in cardiac imaging to examine the heart, lungs, and major blood vessels, aiming to identify abnormalities in the heart's size, shape, and position, such as heart failure, congenital defects, and vascular...
Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...
Computed Tomography
The technique was invented in the 1970s and is based on the principle that as X-rays pass through the body, they are absorbed or reflected at different levels. In the technique, a patient lies on a motorized platform while a computerized axial tomography (CAT) scanner rotates...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...
