Summary

Traumatic asphyxia can cause eye displacement (proptosis) and double vision (diplopia). This previously unreported complication in a child resolved fully within six weeks.

Background:

  • Traumatic asphyxia is a rare condition resulting from severe chest compression.
  • Ocular complications are not commonly associated with traumatic asphyxia.

Observation:

  • An 11-year-old boy sustained a crush injury from an automatic garage door.
  • The patient presented with proptosis and diplopia following the injury.

Findings:

  • Computed tomography confirmed globe displacement without retrobulbar hemorrhage or skull fracture.
  • Proptosis was attributed to traumatic displacement of orbital fat.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a previously unreported complication of traumatic asphyxia.
