Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if UK firefighters experience increased mortality from cancers and other diseases.
  • To compare mortality risks in UK firefighters against the general UK population.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study analyzing mortality data of Scottish male firefighters from 2000-2020.
  • Standardized Mortality Ratios (SMRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

  • Increased mortality was also noted for ischaemic heart diseases (SMR 5.27), stroke (SMR 2.69), pulmonary diseases (SMR 3.04), renal failure (SMR 3.28), and musculoskeletal diseases (SMR 5.64).

Conclusions:

  • UK firefighters exhibit significantly higher mortality rates from various cancers and other diseases.
  • Urgent implementation of preventative health monitoring and presumptive legislation is crucial.
  • These measures are necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of UK firefighters.
