Patient-centered Care01:13

Patient-centered Care

2.1K
Patient-centered care involves delivering care beyond inpatient hospitalization. Reflective practice can enhance a patient-centered approach. Reflective practice is a process of reasoning that considers all aspects of the present situation, including practicalities, learning from personal practice, and consideration of patient needs. Patients appreciate care decisions made while considering their input. Involving the patient in their care provides the patient with a sense of contribution rather...

Secondary Healthcare System

1.6K
Secondary healthcare is offered by a specialist, generally in hospitals or clinics for patients referred by primary healthcare providers. It occurs when a person has an illness or injury that requires specific medical care. Secondary care is often referred to as acute care. Secondary care can range from uncomplicated care to repair a minor laceration or treat a strep throat infection to more complicated emergent care, such as treating a head injury sustained in an automobile accident. Issues And Trends In Healthcare Delivery System

5.7K
The issues and trends in healthcare delivery are constantly changing. The COVID-19 pandemic is one recent issue that wreaked havoc on healthcare systems, causing a shortage of healthcare workers, high demand for medicines and supplies, and increased medical expenditure due to a lack of insurance. Other issues include rising healthcare costs and care fragmentation.
Cost Containment
Payment for healthcare services has historically promoted adoption of costly and often unnecessary or inefficient...

Summary

Team-based care models improve physician satisfaction and reduce administrative tasks. While patient satisfaction increased, clinical outcomes were mixed, and cost-effectiveness was not demonstrated in this pilot study.

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Primary Care Medicine
  • Team-Based Healthcare Models

Background:

  • Primary care physicians face increasing demands and administrative burdens.
  • Physician multitasking and extra hours impact quality of life and patient care.
  • Team-based collaborative models offer potential solutions by reallocating tasks to non-physician staff.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To pilot and evaluate a team-based collaborative model in a primary care setting.
  • To assess the impact of the model on physician workload, staff and patient satisfaction, and clinical outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A pilot study was conducted at a small physician practice using a team-based model.
  • Medical assistants/licensed practical nurses (MA/LPN) partnered with primary care physicians.
  • MA/LPNs managed pending orders, coordinated care, provided education, and communicated messages under physician supervision.

Main Results:

  • Improved staff and patient satisfaction observed after 6 months.
  • Significant decrease in physician administrative workload.
  • No improvement in cost-effectiveness; mixed results in clinical metrics (improved elderly screening, no change in chronic disease metrics).

Conclusions:

  • The team-based model enhanced satisfaction and reduced physician clerical burden, increasing appointment availability.
  • Clinical outcomes were varied, and the model did not prove cost-effective in this pilot.
  • Further studies in larger settings are recommended to assess reproducibility of findings.
