Summary

This study found that combining voice therapy with interferential current (IFC) stimulation improved vocal function in patients with functional dysphonia (FD) who had insufficient subglottic pressure. The treatment enhanced voice quality and patient-reported outcomes.

Background:

  • Functional dysphonia (FD) is characterized by insufficient subglottic pressure, leading to weak voice or aphonia.
  • Standard voice therapy (VTx) is often ineffective for some patients with refractory FD.
  • Interferential current (IFC) stimulation has potential as a laryngeal afferent to modulate vocal function.

Observation:

  • A study assessed six female patients with refractory FD and insufficient subglottic pressure, two of whom had aphonia.
  • Initial VTx over two months showed poor improvement in vocal function.
  • Patients then received concurrent VTx and neck IFC stimulation for three months.

Findings:

  • All patients demonstrated improved voice quality after VTx with IFC stimulation.
  • Objective measures showed increased maximum phonation time and subglottic pressure.
  • Subjective assessment via the voice handicap index-10 indicated significant improvement.

Implications:

  • VTx combined with IFC stimulation may offer a viable treatment option for functional dysphonia.
  • This approach could help adjust vocal function in patients with insufficient subglottic pressure.
  • Further research is warranted to validate IFC stimulation's role in vocal rehabilitation.
