Epidermal stem cells (EpiSCs) are mainly located at the basal layer of the epidermis. These cells repair minor injuries of the skin and replace dead skin cells. Observation:

  • A 26-year-old male with a 15-year-old burn scar on his right cheek experienced scar recurrence and widening post-serial excision.
  • The patient presented with noticeable facial asymmetry and lip deviation.

Findings:

  • Hair follicle grafting using 2,642 grafts harvested from the scalp was performed to manage the facial scar.
  • Excellent hair growth was observed at the one-year follow-up, with high patient satisfaction.
  • Significant improvement in lip deviation and overall facial symmetry was noted.

Implications:

  • Hair restoration via grafting offers a promising permanent, single-stage solution for hair-bearing facial scars.
  • This technique can effectively address functional and aesthetic concerns associated with complex facial scarring.
  • Successful hair grafting can restore natural appearance and improve patient self-esteem in reconstructive surgery.
