Effect of Sickle Cell Trait on Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection

Sickle cell trait (HbAS) did not affect human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) prevalence or severity in Nigerian patients. However, a trend towards lower viral load in females suggests a potential interaction between sickle cell trait and HIV-1 severity in women.
