Interventional Pain Management in the Treatment of Chronic Pelvic Pain

Purpose Of Review:
Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a common yet complex disease in the field of urology, gynecology, and pain management. This review article summarizes the anatomy and physiology of CPP with an in-depth discussion of established and emerging interventional treatment options.
Recent Findings:
Though psychosocial variables play a significant role in the development and propagation of CPPS, interventional treatment strategies are available to ameliorate symptoms. Sympathetic and peripheral nerve blocks along with chemical and radiofrequency denervation are conventional, evidence-based treatments. Recent advances in spinal cord stimulation and dorsal root ganglion stimulation offer novel and effective therapeutic options to treat CPPS. A biopsychosocial model should be employed for effective management of CPPS with advances in neuromodulation offering newfound hope in alleviating symptoms and restoring function.
