Summary

Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) guided biopsy is effective for lesions without clear ultrasound or mammogram signs. This method accurately identified benign and malignant findings, proving useful in breast cancer diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Radiology
  • Oncology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) is an emerging tool for breast lesion detection.
  • Identifying lesions lacking sonographic or mammographic correlation presents a diagnostic challenge.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and yield of CEM-guided biopsy for lesions without sonographic or mammographic correlates.
  • To assess the diagnostic accuracy and safety of CEM-guided biopsy in this specific patient group.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective single-center study involving 50 women with 51 CEM-enhancing lesions.
  • CEM-guided biopsy was performed on lesions lacking other imaging correlates.
  • Biopsy success rates, procedure time, and pathology concordance were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Biopsy was technically successful for 46 of 51 lesions (90.2% success rate).
  • The cancellation rate due to non-visualization was 9.8%.
  • All biopsies showed concordant pathology: 25 benign, 10 high-risk, and 11 malignant. No malignancy was missed at follow-up for non-visualized or benign lesions.

Conclusions:

  • CEM-guided biopsy is a feasible and effective method for diagnosing breast lesions that are only visible on CEM.
  • This technique provides accurate pathological assessment, aiding in the management of breast cancer.
  • CEM-guided biopsy can reduce diagnostic uncertainty for subtle breast abnormalities.
