Hyperammonemia Due to Empyema

A rare case of severe hyperammonemia (high ammonia levels) caused by empyema (pus in the pleural space) was reported. This finding highlights a potential link between pleural infections and elevated ammonia, even with normal liver function.

- This is the first reported instance of hyperammonemia secondary to empyema in the English literature.
- Clinicians should consider empyema as a potential cause of hyperammonemia in patients with respiratory symptoms and altered consciousness, even with preserved liver function.
