Hungarian adults exhibit high sedentary behavior (SB), with young adults and office workers being particularly vulnerable groups. A multi-item questionnaire (SBQ) reveals significantly higher sitting times than a single-item measure (IPAQ).
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Sedentary behavior (SB) is a growing public health concern, yet it receives less research attention than physical activity (PA).
- Understanding SB patterns is crucial for developing targeted health interventions.
- Existing measurement tools may not accurately capture total sitting time.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe the sedentary lifestyle of the Hungarian adult population.
- To identify vulnerable demographic groups with high sitting times.
- To compare sitting time estimates from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and the Sedentary Behavior Questionnaire (SBQ).
Main Methods:
- Cross-sectional study utilizing self-reported data from 1295 Hungarian adults.
- Data collected via questionnaires assessing sedentary behavior and physical activity.
- Statistical analysis (ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey tests) to examine associations between sitting time and socio-demographic variables.
Main Results:
- The SBQ indicated significantly higher daily sitting times (7.81 hours weekdays, 7.01 hours weekends) compared to IPAQ (4.79 hours weekdays, 3.73 hours weekends).
- Young adults (18-29 years) reported the highest sitting times (over 9 hours/day).
- Vulnerable groups identified include young adults, men, capital city residents, and sedentary workers, with specific sedentary activities being computer work and TV watching.
Conclusions:
- The multi-item SBQ provides a more comprehensive measure of sedentary time than the single-item IPAQ.
- Young adults, men, capital city residents, and sedentary workers represent key populations at risk for excessive sitting.
- Targeted public health strategies and interventions are necessary to mitigate the health risks associated with high sedentary behavior in these identified groups.
