Summary

Spending two hours outdoors in sunlight thinned the choroid, but this effect reversed after exposure. Retinal thickness also changed, showing sensitivity to outdoor environments and exposure duration.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Environmental Health

Background:

  • Time outdoors is linked to reduced myopia development.
  • The choroid's role in this protective effect is under investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of two hours of outdoor sunlight exposure on adult retinal and choroidal thickness.
  • To understand the physiological responses of the eye to different light environments.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty adults underwent three experimental sessions: indoor light, darkness, and outdoor sunlight.
  • Spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) measured retinal and choroidal thickness over 2 hours and follow-up.
  • Specific measurements included choroidal, total retinal, and photoreceptor segment thicknesses.

Main Results:

  • Outdoor exposure significantly thinned the choroid compared to indoor or dark conditions.
  • Total retinal thickness increased during and after outdoor exposure.
  • Photoreceptor outer segments thinned, while inner segments thickened during outdoor exposure.

Conclusions:

  • Two hours of high-intensity sunlight unexpectedly thinned the choroid, with recovery post-exposure.
  • Retinal thickness demonstrated varied responses to outdoor versus indoor environments.
  • Eye structure changes were sensitive to the duration of light exposure.
