Purpose of the Study:

  • To provide updated and extended data on anaphylaxis in Latin America.
  • To identify common triggers, clinical features, and treatment patterns of anaphylaxis in the region.

Main Methods:

  • An online questionnaire was distributed to 67 allergy units across 12 Latin American countries and Spain.
  • Data collected included demographic information, clinical features, severity, triggering agents, and treatment of 817 anaphylactic reactions.

Main Results:

  • Drug-induced anaphylaxis (DIA) was most frequent (40.6%), followed by food-induced anaphylaxis (FIA) (32.9%) and venom-induced anaphylaxis (VIA) (12%).
  • Common triggers included NSAIDs and beta-lactam antibiotics for DIA; milk and egg for children's FIA; shellfish, fruits, and fish for adults' FIA; and fire ants for VIA.
  • Epinephrine was administered in only 43.8% of episodes, and prescribed post-treatment in 13% of cases.

Conclusions:

  • Drugs, specific foods (varying by age), and fire ants are primary anaphylaxis inducers in Latin America.
  • The low rate of epinephrine use underscores an urgent need to improve the dissemination and implementation of anaphylaxis management guidelines.
