This study shows a couples-based dyadic coping intervention is feasible and acceptable for colorectal cancer couples. The program improved dyadic coping and cancer adaptation, indicating preliminary efficacy.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Psychology
- Couple Therapy
Background:
- Dyadic coping significantly impacts cancer adaptation in couples.
- Limited research exists on dyadic coping interventions for colorectal cancer couples.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a couples-based dyadic coping intervention for colorectal cancer couples.
- The intervention was guided by the Systemic Transactional Model.
Main Methods:
- A pre-/post-test pilot study involved Chinese colorectal cancer couples.
- Six intervention sessions were delivered face-to-face or via telephone.
- Feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy were evaluated using established scales and participant feedback.
Main Results:
- Recruitment (67.7%) and retention (76.2%) rates supported feasibility.
- Participant satisfaction indicated program acceptability.
- Small-to-medium effect sizes (Cohen's d = 0.19-0.48) were observed for dyadic coping and cancer adaptation outcomes.
Conclusions:
- The couples-based dyadic coping intervention is feasible, acceptable, and effective for colorectal cancer couples.
- The intervention demonstrated preliminary efficacy in enhancing dyadic coping and cancer adaptation.
- Further large-scale randomized controlled trials are warranted.
