Persuasion Strategies

38.8K
Researchers have tested many persuasion strategies, including the foot-in-the door and the door-in-the-face techniques, in a variety of contexts. Ultimately, the principles are effective in selling products and changing people’s attitude, ideas, and behaviors (Cialdini & Goldstein, 2004).

Teeth

543
The formation of teeth, also known as odontogenesis, is a complex process that begins in utero, around the sixth week of embryonic development. There are three stages to this process: the bud stage, the cap stage, and the bell stage.
In the bud stage, the tooth germ (an aggregation of cells) starts to form in the developing jawbone. During the cap stage, the tooth germ differentiates into enamel organ, dental papilla, and dental sac, which will later develop into the tooth's enamel, dentin...

Summary

The UK Government

Area of Science:

  • Dental Public Health
  • Health Policy Analysis

Background:

  • A British Dental Journal article proposed incremental modifications to the general dental services contract for delivering National Health Service (NHS) dental care within budget.
  • Successful financing agreements for NHS dental care necessitate satisfaction from both funders and service providers regarding contract specifics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To critically analyze the UK's current units of dental activity contract for NHS dental care.
  • To challenge the notion that the contract can be incrementally modified for a mutually agreeable solution.
  • To posit that the contract's design intentionally discourages dentists from providing NHS care, shifting blame for service failure to providers.

Main Methods:

  • Critical analysis of the UK's current general dental services contract.

  • Review of arguments for incremental contract modification.
  • Theoretical examination of the UK Government's intent behind the contract's structure.
  • Main Results:

    • The current units of dental activity contract is argued to be deliberately constructed to deter dentists from NHS service provision.
    • The government's strategy allegedly aims to attribute the failure of NHS dental services to dentists.
    • The author considers the possibility of negotiating a better deal for dentists within the current framework to be naive.

    Conclusions:

    • The current NHS dental contract is viewed not as a basis for negotiation but as a tool to dismantle NHS dental provision.
    • The author concludes that the government's approach is intentionally designed to create a scenario where dentists are blamed for the decline of NHS dental care.
    • Incremental modifications are deemed insufficient; a fundamental reassessment of the contract's purpose and impact is necessary.
