New fluorinated polyhydroxyurethanes (FPHUs) were synthesized using a novel fluorinated bis(cyclocarbonate) monomer. These FPHUs exhibit enhanced thermal properties and higher molar mass compared to their non-fluorinated counterparts.
Area of Science:
- Polymer Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Organic Synthesis
Background:
- Polyhydroxyurethanes (PHUs) are versatile polymers with tunable properties.
- Fluorinated polymers often exhibit unique characteristics such as hydrophobicity and thermal stability.
- Developing novel fluorinated monomers is crucial for advancing polymer science.
Purpose of the Study:
- To synthesize novel fluorinated polyhydroxyurethanes (FPHUs) with varying molar masses.
- To investigate the synthesis and characterization of a new fluorinated bis(cyclocarbonate) monomer.
- To compare the properties of FPHUs with their hydrogenated analogues.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of a fluorinated bis(cyclocarbonate) via carbonylation of a fluorinated diepoxide.
- Optimization of reaction conditions for the polyaddition reaction.
- Polymerization of the fluorinated bis(cyclocarbonate) with diamines to yield FPHUs.
- Characterization using NMR, GPC, DSC, and TGA.
Main Results:
- Successful synthesis of fluorinated bis(cyclocarbonate) in high yield.
- Preparation of FPHUs with primary and secondary hydroxyl groups in 61-82% yield.
- FPHUs demonstrated higher molar mass compared to non-fluorinated PHUs.
- FPHUs showed slightly increased glass transition and decomposition temperatures.
Conclusions:
- A new synthetic route for fluorinated polyhydroxyurethanes was established.
- The synthesized FPHUs possess improved thermal stability and higher molar mass.
- Fluorination offers a promising strategy for enhancing PHU properties.

Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the...
