Nervous Tissue: Glial Cells

3.3K
Glia, or neuroglia, are vital support cells that assist neurons in their functions. The term "glia" originates from the Greek word for "glue," reflecting their role in holding the nervous system together. These cells can be categorized into six types: four in the central nervous system (CNS) and two in the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
The CNS glial cell includes the astrocytes, the oligodendrocytes, the microglia, and the ependymal cells.
Astrocytes are star-shaped glial...

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Neuropathology

Background:

  • Granular cell astrocytoma (GCA) is a rare glial neoplasm.
  • Characterized by abundant granular cytoplasm and immunoreactivity for GFAP and S100 stains.

Observation:

  • A case of GCA in a 64-year-old male is presented.
  • Symptoms included seizures, right-sided weakness, and loss of consciousness.
  • Microscopy revealed sheets of large cells with eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, lacking high-grade features.

Findings:

  • The tumor exhibited classic features of GCA.
  • Differential diagnosis considered benign histiocytic conditions.
  • The observed GCA presented an aggressive clinical course.

Implications:

  • Accurate and early diagnosis of GCA is essential for patient management.
  • Understanding the aggressive nature of GCA is critical for prognosis.
  • Further research into GCA pathogenesis and treatment is warranted.
