Summary

Interactive e-learning modules and traditional text-based methods are equally effective for teaching peripheral blood smear analysis. Both approaches significantly improved pathology trainees' test scores, with no performance difference between them.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of an interactive e-learning module versus a traditional text-based method for teaching peripheral blood smear analysis.
  • To assess trainee engagement and learning outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • Pathology trainees were randomized to complete either an e-learning module or a PDF reading exercise.
  • Participants completed pre- and post-intervention multiple-choice tests on peripheral blood smear findings.
  • Trainee experience and engagement were evaluated.

Main Results:

  • Both e-learning and PDF groups showed significant improvement in post-test scores compared to pre-test scores.
  • No significant difference in performance was observed between the e-learning and PDF groups.
  • Trainees with less hematopathology experience showed a trend toward greater improvement.
