This study established consensus on essential knowledge and skills for nursing students in venous leg ulcer care. It also proposed educational strategies and developed a preliminary questionnaire for assessing this crucial nursing competency.
Area of Science:
- Nursing Education
- Wound Care
- Venous Leg Ulcers
Background:
- Current undergraduate nursing programs lack specified content and strategies for venous leg ulcer (VLU) care education.
- Existing knowledge assessment tools for VLU care are inadequate.
Purpose of the Study:
- To achieve consensus on necessary knowledge and skills for nursing students in VLU care.
- To identify effective educational strategies for VLU care.
- To develop a draft questionnaire for assessing VLU care knowledge.
Main Methods:
- An e-Delphi study involving 17 Chronic Wound Care expert nurses was conducted over two rounds (January-March 2022).
- Expert consensus was sought on VLU care knowledge, skills, and educational implementation strategies.
- Data analysis included statistical and qualitative methods to refine a 72-item questionnaire.
Main Results:
- Consensus was reached on knowledge areas including epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and quality of life related to VLUs.
- Key educational strategies were identified across four domains: subject profile, theoretical teaching, practical classroom teaching, and clinical practice.
- The developed questionnaire achieved high consensus (>86%) in relevance and clarity across both Delphi rounds.
Conclusions:
- Seven knowledge/skill categories and eight subcategories were defined for nursing students' VLU care education.
- Four categories of educational implementation strategies were recognized.
- A high level of consensus supports the validity of the initial questionnaire draft for assessing VLU care knowledge.

Jugular Venous Pressure (JVP) Measurement
Position the patient at a thirty- to forty-five-degree angle or in a semi-fowler's position. Look for the highest point of pulsation in the internal jugular vein and measure the vertical distance to the angle of Loius or sternal angle. A normal JVP is 3-4 cm above...
