This study adapted the Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) to focus on sustaining evidence-based interventions (EBIs). The revised ERIC provides strategies to help researchers and practitioners improve EBI sustainment.
Area of Science:
- Implementation Science
- Sustainability Science
Background:
- Limited evidence exists on strategies for sustained delivery of evidence-based interventions (EBIs).
- Clear definitions and operationalization of sustainment strategies are needed.
- Existing compilations like Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) can be adapted.
Purpose of the Study:
- To adapt, refine, and extend the ERIC compilation with an explicit focus on sustainment.
- To classify ERIC strategies by implementation phase using the Exploration, Preparation, Implementation and Sustainment (EPIS) Framework.
Main Methods:
- A two-phase iterative consensus approach was used to adapt ERIC.
- Strategies were mapped against sustainment barriers, and definitions were revised.
- Published sustainment interventions were coded against the adapted ERIC glossary.
Main Results:
- 41 of 73 ERIC strategies had surface-level definition changes for sustainment.
- Four strategies received deeper definition changes, and one new strategy was added.
- The EPIS Framework indicated most strategies are relevant during preparation and implementation phases.
Conclusions:
- A sustainment-explicit ERIC glossary is now available for improving EBI sustainment.
- Empirical testing of these strategies' impact on sustainment is needed.
- Future research may require further refinement or additions to the ERIC strategies.
