Healthcare Associated Infections II: Preventive Measures

2.7K
Essential infection prevention measures are based on the knowledge of the infection chain, the modes of transmission in healthcare settings, and the use of the best practices in all healthcare settings. Compulsory public reporting of healthcare-associated infection rates is needed to allow individuals and the community to make informed choices regarding selecting a healthcare facility.
The best practices for preventing healthcare-associated infections include hand hygiene, patient risk...

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection01:26

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

12.1K
The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases.
The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin...

Area of Science:

  • Social Sciences
  • Public Health
  • Risk Communication

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic, a "total social fact", has prompted extensive research on public risk perceptions and mitigation behaviors, primarily focusing on health risks.
  • However, the pandemic's broad societal impact necessitates examining a wider spectrum of perceived risks beyond just health concerns.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To explore public perceptions of health, economic, and societal risks related to the COVID-19 pandemic across five European countries.
  • To investigate how perceptions of governmental risk communication influence these risk perceptions and subsequent mitigation behaviors.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was conducted with representative public samples in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom (N = 4,206).
  • Structural equation modeling was employed to analyze the relationships between perceived risk communication, risk perceptions, and mitigation behaviors.

Main Results:

  • Perceptions of effective governmental risk communication directly enhanced behaviors aimed at mitigating COVID-19 health risks.
  • These perceptions indirectly reduced the frequency of certain behaviors by mediating the relationship with broader societal risk perceptions.

Conclusions:

  • Governmental authorities must analyze and communicate about the diverse range of citizen risk perceptions concerning "total social facts" like the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Effective risk communication strategies should consider the complex interplay between health, economic, and societal risk perceptions.
