Blinding01:11

Blinding

Blinding is a commonly used method of not telling participants which treatment a subject is receiving. Blinding is a critical part of a randomized control trial or RCT. It reduces the bias that affects the results. In an RCT, blinding is used in the form of a placebo. A placebo effect occurs when untreated subjects falsely believe they have received the treatment and report improved symptoms. A placebo or a dummy treatment is administered to subjects to negate the bias caused by such an effect.

Area of Science:

  • Clinical Trials
  • Acupuncture Research
  • Medical Reporting Standards

Background:

  • Sham acupuncture is frequently used in clinical trials as a control.
  • Accurate reporting of sham acupuncture procedures is crucial for trial validity.
  • Current reporting guidelines may not sufficiently detail sham acupuncture specifics.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a standardized checklist for reporting sham acupuncture in clinical trials.
  • To enhance the quality and precision of sham acupuncture descriptions.
  • To facilitate the appraisal of sham acupuncture adequacy in research.

Main Methods:

  • A three-stage online Delphi survey involving 23 experts.
  • Consensus-based item selection with >80% agreement.
  • Working group discussions to refine and de-duplicate checklist items.

Main Results:

  • A 23-item checklist, the ACURATE checklist, was finalized.
  • The checklist covers six key categories: type, manipulation, location, regimen, practitioner, and settings.
  • Expert consensus was achieved on the essential reporting elements.

Conclusions:

  • The ACURATE checklist is introduced as an extension to CONSORT and used with STRICTA.
  • It aims to improve the clear depiction of sham needling procedures for enhanced replicability.
  • Researchers are encouraged to adopt ACURATE for trials involving sham acupuncture to improve reporting quality.
