Background:

  • Gamification is a popular teaching method for point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS).
  • Limited data exists on the knowledge acquisition from gamified POCUS educational events.
  • This study aimed to assess knowledge improvement from a POCUS gamification event.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if a POCUS gamification event enhanced knowledge of POCUS interpretation.
  • To evaluate the impact on clinical integration of POCUS.
  • To assess changes in self-reported comfort levels with POCUS.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective observational study involving fourth-year medical students.
  • A 2.5-hour POCUS gamification event with eight objective-oriented stations.
  • Pre- and post-assessments were administered and analyzed using statistical tests.

Main Results:

  • Knowledge assessment scores significantly improved from 68% pre-event to 78% post-event (P=0.04).
  • 82% of 265 participating students had minimal prior POCUS experience.
  • Self-reported comfort in image acquisition, interpretation, and clinical integration significantly increased (P<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • Gamified POCUS education with defined learning objectives improves student knowledge.
  • The event enhanced understanding of POCUS interpretation and clinical application.
  • Significant improvements in self-reported POCUS comfort were observed.
