Diversity of Antigen Receptors01:28

Diversity of Antigen Receptors

692
Antigen receptors are essential components of the immune system crucial in defending the body against foreign invaders. These receptors are present on the surface of B and T cells, enabling them to recognize antigens and mount an appropriate immune response.
Before encountering any antigen, lymphocytes express these receptors. On B cells, the antigen receptor is a membrane-bound antibody molecule called BCR; on T cells, it is a T cell receptor or TCR. B and T cell receptors are composed of two...

Diversity in Cell Signaling Responses

6.5K
The physiological function of a cell and cellular communication are outcomes of a range of extrinsic signals, intracellular signaling pathways, and cellular responses. No two cell types express the same repertoire of signaling components. Receptors are highly selective for their cognate ligands, but once activated, they can alter multiple cellular processes such as DNA transcription, protein synthesis, and metabolic activity.

Genetic Variation01:25

Genetic Variation

340
Genetic variation is the diversity in DNA sequences found among individuals of the same species. This diversity is crucial for a species' survival because it helps organisms adapt to environmental changes. Genetic variation begins with fertilization, where an egg and sperm cell merge. Each of these cells carries 23 chromosomes, up to 46 in the fertilized egg. Chromosomes are long DNA strands that contain genes, the basic units of heredity.
Genes exist in different versions called alleles,...

Cell Diversity01:13

Cell Diversity

3.3K
The concept of a cell started with microscopic observations of dead cork tissue by Robert Hooke in 1665. Hooke coined the term "cell" based on the resemblance of the small subdivisions in the cork to the rooms that monks inhabited, called cells. About ten years later, Antonie van Leeuwenhoek became the first person to observe the living and moving cells under a microscope. In the century that followed, the theory that cells represented the basic unit of life developed.
Multicellular...

Variability: Analysis01:11

Variability: Analysis

164
Measures of variability are statistical metrics that reveal the dispersion pattern within a dataset. They are pivotal in biostatistics, providing insights into the heterogeneity within health and biological data. Variability signifies the degree to which data points diverge from one another, helping researchers understand the potential range of values and associated uncertainty within the data.
The range is a simple measure of variability, indicating the difference between the highest and...

Area of Science:

  • Behavioral Science
  • Education

Background:

  • Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) practitioners often lack diversity in race and gender.
  • Many ABA practitioners do not receive training in culturally responsive service delivery (CSRD).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of a supplemental diversity and CSRD curriculum on ABA graduate faculty.
  • To assess changes in diversity and CSRD content within ABA master's program course syllabi.

Main Methods:

  • A pre/post pilot study design was employed.
  • Six ABA faculty members received a supplemental diversity/CSRD curriculum, including tailored objectives and resources.
  • Changes in course syllabi content were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Providing faculty with tailored objectives and resources may increase diversity and CSRD content in course syllabi.
  • This pilot study suggests a positive effect of supplemental curriculum on faculty integration of diversity and CSRD topics.

Conclusions:

  • Incorporating diversity and CSRD training into ABA graduate programs is recommended.
  • Further empirical research is needed to develop and validate effective training strategies for ABA graduate programs.
