Background:

  • Undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) have a disconnect regarding resident preparedness.
  • Medical schools train graduates, but residency programs' entrustment levels are unclear.
  • Specialty-Specific Entrustable Professional Activities (SSEPAs) can bridge this gap.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and pilot an SSEPA curriculum for the final year of medical school.
  • To foster an alliance between UME and GME for a smoother transition.
  • To assess student self-assessed competence and confidence.

Main Methods:

  • Piloted an SSEPA program in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, and Obstetrics & Gynecology.
  • Utilized Kern's curriculum development framework for longitudinal curriculum design.
  • Administered pre- and post-course self-assessments using the Chen scale for Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs).

Main Results:

  • 42 students completed the SSEPA curriculum.
  • Significant increases in self-assessed competence and confidence were observed across all specialties.
  • Competence scores rose, for example, from 2.61 to 3.65 in Internal Medicine.

Conclusions:

  • A specialty-specific, competency-based curriculum improves medical students' confidence.
  • The SSEPA framework facilitates a more effective educational handoff from UME to GME.
  • This approach enhances learner readiness for residency.
