Background:

Understanding cognitive processes underlying aggression is crucial for developing effective interventions.
Previous research suggests a link between aggressive behavior and perception, but the nature of this link requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between self-reported aggression and the perception of violence in visual stimuli.
To explore whether cognitive biases play a role in maintaining aggressive behavior.

Main Methods:

A correlational study involving 43 secondary school students.
Utilized self-report questionnaires for aggression and binocular tachistoscopic presentation of neutral and violent slide pairs.
Stimuli were scored for violent content.

Main Results:

A significant positive correlation was found between self-reported involvement in violent acts and the perception of violence in the stimulus array.
This association remained consistent across varying age, IQ, socio-economic status, and mood.

Conclusions:

The findings suggest a perceptual bias, where individuals predisposed to aggression perceive more violence.
This perceptual bias may contribute to the maintenance and escalation of aggressive behavior.
Cognitive techniques may be more effective for interventions with aggressive youth compared to traditional behavioral programs.
