Background:

  • CKD-associated RLS (CKD-A-RLS) is linked to increased mortality, cardiovascular events, depression, insomnia, and reduced quality of life.

Approach:

  • A comprehensive review of Medline and Google Scholar searches up to May 2022 was conducted.
  • 175 articles were analyzed, focusing on epidemiology, correlating factors, and both pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options for CKD-A-RLS in adults and children.

Key Points:

  • Prevalence of RLS in CKD patients is substantially higher than in the general population.
  • Correlations between CKD-A-RLS and factors like age, gender, iron levels, and parathyroid hormone were explored, though results were often inconsistent.
  • Limited studies exist on CKD-A-RLS treatment, with ongoing research into dopaminergic drugs and Alpha2-Delta ligands.

Conclusions:

  • Pharmacologic treatments including levodopa, ropinirole, pramipexole, rotigotine, gabapentin, and pregabalin show promise for CKD-A-RLS.
  • Non-pharmacologic interventions such as aerobic exercise and massage with lavender oil may serve as beneficial adjunct therapies.
