African rhinoceros genomes contain novel endogenous gammaretroviruses (ERVs), named SimumERV and DicerosERV. These recently acquired ERVs, closely related to rodent retroviruses, suggest an African origin and challenge previous assumptions about perissodactyl genomes lacking such elements.
