Open Angle Glaucoma: Treatment

504
In open-angle glaucoma, the iridocorneal angle remains open, but the trabecular meshwork becomes stiff, slowing down the outflow of aqueous humor. This causes a buildup of aqueous humor in the anterior chamber, leading to a sudden increase in intraocular pressure. The treatment for open-angle glaucoma focuses on reducing the elevated intraocular pressure by either decreasing the secretion of aqueous humor or increasing its outflow.

Summary

Intravitreal dexamethasone implants stabilized vision in two patients with autoimmune retinopathy (AIR). This treatment, involving semiannual injections, halted functional vision loss, suggesting a potential therapeutic option for this complex condition.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Immunology
  • Retinal Diseases

Background:

  • Autoimmune retinopathy (AIR) presents a significant challenge in ophthalmology due to its complex nature and lack of standardized treatment protocols.
  • Understanding the immunological mechanisms underlying AIR is crucial for developing effective therapeutic strategies.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated the efficacy of intravitreal dexamethasone implants in two patients diagnosed with autoimmune retinopathy (AIR).
  • Ocular coherence tomography, visual field testing, and electroretinography were employed for patient monitoring.

Findings:

  • Intravitreal dexamethasone implantation resulted in an interruption of functional vision loss in both patients.
  • Patients maintained stable visual function with the administration of semiannual dexamethasone injections.

Implications:

  • The findings suggest that intravitreal dexamethasone implants may represent a viable therapeutic option for managing autoimmune retinopathy.
  • Further research is warranted to establish the long-term efficacy and safety of this treatment modality in a larger cohort of AIR patients.
